10 Pokémon With the Weirdest Evolutions

Evolution in Pokémon usually means getting bigger, spikier and angrier. But every so often a Pokémon evolves into something so wildly different that you have to assume the designers swapped notebooks halfway through. Here are ten of the weirdest evolution lines in the franchise.
10. Magikarp → Gyarados
The most famous glow-up in gaming. A useless flopping fish that knows one move spends a few levels splashing about and then becomes a towering sea serpent capable of levelling a town. Nothing about the fish suggested the dragon was in there.
9. Feebas → Milotic
Feebas is a scruffy, tattered brown fish that looks like it lost a fight with a fishing net. Evolve it and you get Milotic, one of the most elegant Pokémon ever designed. It's the ugly duckling story, except the duckling also needed maxed-out beauty stats to get there.
8. Rockruff → Lycanroc
A perfectly normal puppy that becomes one of three completely different wolves depending on what time of day it is. Day, night, or dusk — same dog, three temperaments, three body plans. Very few Pokémon let the clock decide who they grow up to be.
7. Rhydon → Rhyperior
Rhydon evolves by holding a Protector, and its upgrade is essentially bolting rock armour onto itself and gaining the ability to fire rocks out of holes in its hands. It didn't grow — it accessorised.
6. Cubone → Marowak
A small dinosaur wearing its dead mother's skull evolves into a slightly larger dinosaur that has grown into the skull. The lore is grim enough on its own; the fact that the helmet is treated as part of the evolution makes it stranger still.
5. Karrablast & Shelmet
These two only evolve when traded for each other — and when they do, Karrablast steals Shelmet's shell. One becomes armoured, the other becomes a naked little slug with a spear. It's the only evolution that requires mutual theft.
4. Inkay → Malamar
Inkay evolves only if you physically turn your console upside down at the right level. A squid that requires you to flip reality to grow up, and then becomes a hypnotic mind-controller. Fitting, honestly.
3. Yamask → Cofagrigus
A ghost carrying a mask of its former human face evolves into a haunted sarcophagus with four golden arms. The little wandering spirit becomes the coffin. Nobody ever explains who is in the coffin.
2. Applin → Flapple / Appletun
A worm living inside an apple becomes either a dragon wearing the apple as wings, or a dragon lying under the apple like a very tired pie. The same starting creature, two completely different apple-based outcomes.
1. Bramblin → Brambleghast
A tumbleweed possessed by a spirit that wanders until it evolves into a bigger tumbleweed with arms and a screaming face. It's less an evolution and more a haunting that got worse over time.
